Telluride · Mountain Village · Ouray · Ridgway · Silverton
The San Juan Mountains are the most dramatic range in Colorado. Jagged 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks, alpine lakes, and the famous Million Dollar Highway threading between them. Life here is built around the outdoors and a tight-knit, festival-loving community, with a real spread in price and pace from town to town.
Telluride is a world-class resort town with prices to match. Finding a home, or even workforce housing, in the box canyon is famously hard, and many who work in town live in Ridgway, Norwood, or Montrose and commute. Ridgway and Ouray offer a more grounded, year-round community at a fraction of Telluride's cost. Winters are long and snowy; summers bring wildflowers, festivals, and endless trails. If you want big-mountain beauty and don't mind a small-town pace (and a drive to the nearest big-box store), this is one of the most spectacular places to call home in Colorado.
Crested Butte · Mt. Crested Butte · Gunnison
The Gunnison Valley is end-of-the-road Colorado. Authentic, outdoorsy, and a little less polished than the marquee resort towns. It's the birthplace of mountain biking, the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, and home to a genuine college-town economy in Gunnison alongside the ski-town energy of Crested Butte.
Crested Butte is regularly called “the last great Colorado ski town”. Funky, friendly, and increasingly pricey, with limited inventory and a serious housing crunch for the local workforce. Gunnison, about 30 minutes south, offers a more affordable four-season community anchored by the university and a ranching heritage (it also gets famously cold, pack for real winters). The valley rewards people who genuinely live outside: world-class mountain biking, skiing, fishing, and trails right out the door. Expect a slower pace, a strong community, and a longer drive to a major airport or city.
Aspen · Snowmass · Basalt · Carbondale · Glenwood Springs
The Roaring Fork Valley runs from glittering Aspen down through Snowmass, Basalt, and the creative hub of Carbondale to Glenwood Springs. It's one of the most beautiful. And most economically varied. Valleys in Colorado, where billionaire enclaves sit a short drive from working arts towns and hot-springs communities.
Aspen is in a class of its own. A global resort town with some of the highest real estate prices in the country, where even modest homes command millions. Most people who work in the valley live “downvalley” in Basalt, Carbondale, or Glenwood Springs and commute up Highway 82. Carbondale has become a destination in its own right: a walkable arts town under Mount Sopris with a strong creative and outdoor culture. The whole valley offers world-class skiing, music, food, and culture. At a cost of living well above the Colorado average. It's a spectacular place to land if the numbers work for your situation.
