Why Durango stays with you
I love Durango because it combines a true small-town scale with experiences that usually belong to a much larger destination: a lively historic downtown, a regional college and airport, the Animas River, a ski resort just north of town, and one of Colorado's iconic train journeys.
The train ride into Silverton is still on my own list. That matters here: Explore Colorado does not need to pretend every experience is already checked off. Some places are worth sharing because they keep calling you back.
Bayfield adds another dimension—quieter, greener in many surrounding areas, and often considered by people seeking more space outside Durango. Cortez shifts the landscape again, toward mesas, agriculture, archaeology, and the Four Corners.

A relocation decision here is not only about a home. It is about winter access, employment, healthcare, schools, acreage, utilities, commuting, wildfire exposure, altitude, and how frequently you need regional services.
Durango
Consider it for the broadest mix of services, education, culture, dining, river access, business activity, and proximity to both the airport and Purgatory.
Silverton
Consider it for authentic high-alpine living and exceptional mountain access—while carefully evaluating winter conditions, limited services, housing supply, and remote-community realities.
Bayfield
Consider it for a smaller-town setting near Durango, access to the Pine River Valley, and the possibility of more land or wooded surroundings outside town. Do not assume it is always less expensive; compare current inventory and total ownership costs.
Cortez
Consider it for Four Corners access, agriculture, archaeology, a different housing market, and a landscape that feels more mesa-and-desert than high alpine.
