Why You’ll Love It

The mountain connects the entire region.

Pikes Peak rises above red-rock parks, historic Manitou Springs, the Air Force Academy, Cheyenne Mountain, forested roads, fossil beds, and the old mining communities of Teller County.

You can drive through Garden of the Gods in the morning, walk among the formations, eat in Manitou Springs, climb toward alpine country, and finish the day in a completely different landscape.

Colorado Springs supplies the airport, lodging, restaurants, healthcare, and major services. The experiences that define this guide begin when you look toward the mountain and follow the roads outward.

Field Notes

What I’d tell a friend before they go.

This region is tied to several turning points in my Colorado story: an early mountain hike, a family visit, and the conference that brought back the question of why I had never moved here.

Why This Place Matters

The trip that brought me back to Colorado.

Long before Explore Colorado existed, I left the Midwest hoping to build a life in Colorado. I was young, hit a snowstorm, and changed direction. I settled outside the state, but I never stopped intending to return.

Years later, a conference near Cheyenne Mountain brought the question back: Why had I never moved here? Eventually, I sold my home and headed to Colorado to travel, explore, find trails, discover mountain towns, and figure out where I belonged. Those travels became the beginning of Explore Colorado.

My First Mountain Hike

My First Mountain Hike

Many years ago, I hiked Pikes Peak. I believe it was my first real mountain hike, and it helped establish the connection that kept drawing me back to Colorado.

Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods

Drive it—then get out and walk. I have visited twice. The scenic drive is excellent, but the trails and short walks change the experience. In summer, go early. The exposed rock landscape heats up quickly.

Air Force Academy

Air Force Academy

I drove my nephew by the Academy while he was preparing for Air Force summer training. Seeing the campus in that context made it more meaningful than a routine sightseeing stop.

Plan Your Trip

Plan for heat below, alpine weather above, and reservations in between.

Garden Morning

Arrive early in summer, drive the scenic loop, use the pull-offs, and walk before the exposed landscape becomes hot.

Pikes Peak Day

Choose the highway, Cog Railway, or a serious hiking objective. Do not overload a summit day.

Manitou Day

Walk downtown, use the free shuttle when practical, visit the mineral springs, and plan parking before arriving.

Incline Day

The Incline is rated extreme, gains about 2,000 feet in less than a mile, and requires a reservation and waiver.

Fossil Day

Florissant offers outdoor petrified stumps, exhibits, trails, and a quieter high-country landscape.

Gold Country Day

Allow time for mountain roads, changing weather, historic districts, and elevation changes.

Know Before You Go

Elevation changes faster than many visitors expect.

Pikes Peak reaches 14,115 feet. Summit conditions can be dramatically colder and windier than Garden of the Gods or Manitou Springs. Carry layers, water, sun protection, and enough time to descend safely.

Reserve Cog Railway seats in advance. Verify current Pikes Peak Highway conditions, Incline reservations, Air Force Academy access, trail closures, wildfire conditions, and event-related traffic immediately before the trip.

Save reservations and road checks before leaving.

Keep railway tickets, summit plans, parking, trail access, events, weather, and lodging in one place.
