Follow the Arkansas River.
Some of my favorite drives here are not the famous passes. They are the backroads that stay close to the river, where cottonwoods, ranches, mountain views, and the sound of moving water make the trip feel unhurried.

Raft, fly fish, follow backroads beside the Arkansas River, cross the Continental Divide, and spend an easy weekend exploring downtown Salida.
Why You’ll Love It
The Arkansas Valley is built for long weekends: coffee and galleries in downtown Salida, rafting and fly fishing on the river, mountain passes in every direction, and hot springs waiting at the end of the day.
One of my favorite ways to experience this valley is to take the slower road, follow the Arkansas River, and stop for lunch where you can hear the water.

The Arkansas River is more than an activity corridor. It shapes the roads, towns, backcountry stops, and the pace of a day in this part of Colorado.

Walk downtown Salida, pick up lunch, and spend a little time beside the Arkansas. You do not have to raft it to enjoy it.
Add the historic mountain settlement to a longer day near Buena Vista and Nathrop, especially when road and weather conditions are favorable.
Some of the best moments here happen between the major stops—along river roads, near ranches, or while watching the light change across the valley.
